MAR50320 Diploma of Maritime Operations is an advanced qualification associated with roles including Master up to 100 metres Near Coastal, Master up to 500 GT and Watchkeeper Deck. For the Master less than 100 metres pathway, AMSA requires an existing Master less than 45 metres or Mate less than 80 metres Certificate of Competency, together with substantial sea service. A Master less than 45 metres holder, for example, generally requires at least 180 days of qualifying service on commercial vessels 24 metres or longer with an AMSA task book, or 360 days without one, including significant navigational watchkeeping experience. The qualification is therefore intended as progression for established professional mariners moving into senior shipboard command roles, rather than an entry pathway for secondary-school students.

Apprentices/trainees with a disability are entitled to work less than 15 hours per week when averaged over a 4 week cycle. They must be a holder of a disability pension and Pension concession card to be approved.
Funded Apprenticeship or Traineeship
No
The Queensland Government funds Skills Assure suppliers (SRTOs) for the provision of services to eligible apprentices and trainees.
For more information, please visit the department's Apprenticeships and Traineeships website.
Minimum education standard
Completion of Year 12 (QLD)

A minimum Year 12 education standard is recommended because MAR50320 involves advanced navigation, vessel management, leadership and analytical skills.

The qualification itself has no formal training package entry requirements. However, for the Master up to 100 metres Near Coastal pathway, AMSA requires relevant prior Certificates of Competency and qualifying sea service.

This commonly involves progression through MAR30924 Certificate III in Maritime Operations (Master up to 24 metres Near Coastal) and MAR40324 Certificate IV in Maritime Operations (Master up to 45 metres Near Coastal).

Additional AMSA requirements include marine radio certification, medical fitness, qualifying sea service and final assessment.
