The primary objective of a Locomotive Driver is to prepare, manage and operate locomotives and trains safely in accordance with their level of competency, safe- working qualifications and established operational procedures, in order to meet customer and operational requirements.
In order to operate and manage train movements to meet the requirements of customers and the business, the Locomotive Driver will be responsible for:
- Ensure the safe, economical and efficient operation of motive power unit(s) by preparing, cleaning, starting, operating, monitoring, shutting down and stabling the unit(s) in accordance with operational procedures.
- Ensure the safe, economical, efficient and timely movement of freight from one location to another by the application of train management techniques, conducting marshalling and shunting operations and observing timetable schedules.
- Ensure all rail safety workers who are associated with the train being worked by the driver have applied the core safe working and operational procedures by observation and validation to the required standards.
- Ensure the identification, response and corrective action to emergency and dangerous situations by the appropriate application of skills, experience and training, certification, self-development and task familiarisation.
- Ensure vigilance is maintained, signal indications are observed, their meaning comprehended, and the required behaviour is applied to meet operational standards.
- Ensure contribution to the commercial viability by effective communication, team participation, and quality of service delivery, compliance with organisational policies and legislation and in the planning of personal work activities.
- Ensure the appropriate operational status and usage of property, assets and equipment (such as radios, motor vehicles, safety equipment, office facilities etc.) by effective maintenance and care to maintain reliable service delivery.
- Ensure that rolling stock, including braking systems, are in a fit and serviceable condition by conducting examinations and minor maintenance, and where appropriate, identifying and rectifying minor faults and failures and communicating with relevant personnel to operational standards.
- Involvement in continuous improvement and maintaining of housekeeping standards within work area.
- Ensure the appropriate behaviour is displayed when engaging with external customers at the load point.
- Recording, processing and monitoring train performance information where required.
- Provisioning and preparing locomotives (single & multiple units) for train operations.
- Checking & testing locomotive control systems.
- Performing and maintaining locomotive train operations in accordance with specifications and procedures.
- Performing/coordinating shunting movements both independently and in cooperation with Shift Managers in accordance with established procedures and standards.
- Achieve specific corridor fuel targets (litres per GTK), implementing fuel saving strategies by monitoring train performance and utilising the locomotive fuel saving features when appropriate.
- Maintaining up to date knowledge of client site requirements, network and safe working policies, procedure, standards and regulations.
- Provide on the job instruction and monitoring to drivers of lower classifications to the extent of their skills and competence.
- Operate company or client motor vehicles as required and perform other duties as allocated by the Shift Supervisor/Operations Manager and/or Planning Team.

7.5 hours per week of paid employment. This may be averaged over a 3 month period.
Other requirements for school-based:
Students not enrolled in years 10, 11 or 12 may be eligible to enter a SAT provided there are exceptional circumstances warranting consideration and all other entry requirements are met, including being of an age where it is legal to undertake paid employment.
Before a student not in years 10, 11 or 12 commences a SAT, a business case supporting the arrangements must be provided to and approved by the Department of Employment, Small Business and Training (DESBT).
Delivery of training to school-based trainees
Limits have been imposed on the amount of institutional training which may be delivered to school-based apprentices, based on the nominal term of a full time training contract. This restriction does not apply to school-based traineeships.

The Child Employment Act states that the minimum age for apprentices and trainees is 13 years of age, unless otherwise stated.
Students not enrolled in years 10, 11 or 12 may be eligible to enter a SAT.
As a general rule, only Australian citizens and New Zealand citizens who have entered Australia on a valid passport have unrestricted rights to employment in Australia.
Visa holders may engage in apprenticeships or traineeships provided their work rights allows this, based on information and advice provided by the Australian Government.

- Some qualifications, such as those considered as thin markets, are managed under special arrangements by the Department. Industrial relations details
Since 1 January 2010, all private sector employers and employees in Queensland, including apprentices and trainees,
have their wages and conditions of employment covered by the Fair Work Act 2009 and modern awards. This legislation
is administered by the Commonwealth Government Fair Work Ombudsman's office.
Apprentices and trainees are considered employees and may receive entitlements the same as other employees such as: annual leave, sick leave, public holidays, superannuation, workers compensation and allowances. Apprentices and trainees must also receive a pay slip to cover full details of the pay for each pay period. Pay slips have to be given to an employee (including apprentices and trainees) within 1 working day of pay day and be either in electronic form or paper hard copy.
Parties should make enquiries with the Fair Work Ombudsman on Ph: 13 13 94 or at http://www.fairwork.gov.au to determine the correct industrial instrument and entitlements.
When employment is ceasing the employer or the employee (apprentice/trainee) must provide the appropriate notice periods as per the relevant award or registered workplace agreement. A notice period is the length of time that an employer or employee (apprentice/trainee) has to give to end employment.
